Research output: Book/ReportBook

Abstract

In the first biography of Dell O'Dell (1897-1962), Michael Claxton shares the story of this pioneering female magician. Though she's best known for her popular night club act during the 30s, 40s, and 50s, she flourished in many genres of entertainment during her lifetime: circus acrobat, vaudeville performer, burlesque entertainer, health lecturer, television star, magic shop owner, and more. With her rhyming patter and lively presentation style, Dell broke set new expectations for what a magician should be. This biography also recounts the life story of her husband, Charlie Carrer (1898-1971), one of the all-time great jugglers.
